Inspired by the view from his window at the Monastery of Saint-Paul de Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, France, van Gogh's original painting and its LEGO recreation depict a magnificent night sky and a sleeping village in Provence. The three-dimensional set was designed by Truman Cheng, a 25-year-old Hong Kong-based LEGO aficionado and PhD student who submitted his work via the LEGO Ideas portal. After receiving 10,000 votes from the community, consideration was given to developing the concept.

Federico Begher, Head of Global Marketing at LEGO claimed that The Starry Night project is so seductive thanks to the expressive brushwork and brilliant colours utilised throughout. The Starry Night painting tells the story of humanity's unending desire for greater things Truman's design was a work of art in and of itself, demonstrating how numerous LEGO pieces and techniques might be employed to duplicate van Gogh's famous painting. So there will be more LEGO sets based on arts in the future?

I love the details and realism of this LEGO set

This is what Truman Cheng has said of his design process, "It was a good mental challenge to come up with tactics and techniques to mimic the aesthetic of the original artwork." There was inventive use of bracket and clip components in the brushwork of the moon and the whirling cloud.

  1. Way cool. This puts the pirate ships and dino scenes to shame. First Doctor Who, now Lego. Not to mention my starry night glasses case and my somewhat related Dr. Who mousepad.
