If you have read my previous post, you would have known that my family and I have planted our very own carpet grass. What you don't know is the type of carpet grass that we have chosen. But before I let you know, let us look at the 4 types of carpet grass for landscaping in Malaysia. In other words, the following are the common carpet grass types that are suitable to our Malaysian weather and climate.

Blessed with a tropical climate and an abundance of rain, we Malaysians love to indulge in the lush greenery that carpet grass can bring. Whether it is for commercial landscaping or for domestic residential landscaping, carpet grass is a popular feature for Malaysians. There are many types of grass or rather carpet grass that we Malaysians love to plant in our lawn, yard or garden. My family and I were so ecstatic that we could finally have our very own carpet grass lawn.

Artificial Grass VS Real Carpet Grass

But before we talk about the types of carpet grass we could plant in our lawn and yard, some of you might ask why opt for carpet grass when you can buy the artificial carpet grass? I will do deep dive on this in another article but to cut long story short, high-quality artificial carpet grass will cost you at least 10 times the cost of the real normal carpet grass. Though there is a guarantee, it is usually around 5-10 years after which the strands of artificial grass will fade in colour or even come off.

1. Japanese Carpet Grass

The Japanese Carpet Grass is arguably one of the most popular carpet grass among Malaysian households. Japanese carpet grass boasts more refined, thin blades compared to the Philippines carpet grass. The grass blades are shorter, compact and amazingly softer. Its soft blades alone have enticed many Malaysians to make it their preferred choice of carpet grass.

If you are looking for premium-looking carpet grass, then you need to consider Japanese carpet grass as it grows really slow and requires little trimming from time to time only. Like any other carpet grass, you will need to water it very often. You might need to spend some time to weed other "invasive" grass or plants since the Japanese carpet grass is a slow-growing grass. The Japanese carpet grass is the most beautiful among the types of carpet grass listed here. Then again, it is also the most expensive carpet grass in Malaysia.

2. Philippine Carpet Grass

This is the carpet grass that I have chosen to plan for my lawn. The Philippine carpet grass ranks as the second-best or most beautiful carpet grass after the Japanese carpet grass. Being known for its hardiness, the Philippine carpet grass is quite resilient and can be easily grown. Once the grass has stabilized, you do not need to water it every single day though I will still advise you to do so.

In my opinion, the Philippine carpet grass is just as beautiful but way cheaper!

The Philippine carpet grass requires a lot of sunlight. So if the area you intend to plant your carpet grass is not exposed to sunlight, then you will need to choose other types of grass listed here. Like the Japanese carpet grass, the Philippine carpet grass also grows relatively slow and hence minimal trimming is needed. I believe I only mow my lawn once per month. Having said so, the Philippine carpet grass is the second most expensive on the list but still, it is relatively cheap if you ask me.

3. Pearl Carpet Grass

Some argue that Pearl Carpet Grass is actually more beautiful than Japanese carpet grass. It really depends on your preference. As the saying goes, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." The leaves or blades of pearl carpet grass are round-shaped like a pearl, of course. Obviously, it is different from the previously mentioned carpet grass native to Japan and the Philippines.

Highly adaptable to our hot and wet weather, the Pearl carpet grass can drain any excess rainwater easily as well. Since many considered the "pearly" blades to be beautiful, the pearl carpet grass is grown in many residential areas as part of their landscaping. 4. Cow Grass

The last on our list is perhaps the most commonly seen carpet grass in Malaysia-Cow Grass. The blades of cow grass are usually broad and of medium-short length. Despite looking rather coarse to our naked eyes, Cow Grass can be really soft to touch. With its roots planted firmly on the ground, cow grass will trail horizontally and split at each end. In fact, this is the number 1 grass planted across almost all the schools in Malaysia thanks to its cheap price.

For the uninitiated, there are two common variants of Cow Grass namely one with the two-petalled leaves and the other one is the three-petalled leaves Cow Grass. If you want to choose Cow Grass as part of your landscaping for your lawn or garden, it is highly advised that you choose the three-petalled Cow Grass as you will have denser and richer cover for your soil. Two-petalled leaves are usually planted on slopes and roadside. So far, cow grass is the most budget-friendly grass you can get for your landscaping.

My Honest Review About Philippine Carpet Grass

There you have it folks, the 4 common types of carpet grass for landscaping in Malaysia. Eventually, I have decided to purchase and plant the Philippine carpet grass for my lawn due to its beautiful outlook and cheaper price compared to the Japanese carpet grass. After almost 5 months, I am more than pleased with my Philippines carpet grass. It is thriving and indeed it is low-maintenance without needing a lot of trimming or weeding.

If you have the budget, I would highly suggest that you opt for the Japanese carpet grass, but if you ask me the Philippine carpet grass is equally pleasing to the eye as well.
