If you own a house with some plot of land, you would most probably want to plant carpet grass to make your dream house looks greener and of course more comfortable. In this post, I will show you how to plant carpet grass on your own without burning your wallet. Yes, you can actually plant your carpet grass and do the landscaping on your own without breaking your bank but of course, you will need to invest some time and sweat a little bit.
How To Plant Carpet Grass On Your Own
Real Carpet Grass VS Artificial Carpet Grass
Before you start doing anything, it is important to know if you have got the time to maintain your real (breathing) carpet grass lawn after you have planted them. That is why a lot considered purchasing artificial carpet grass instead of planting the real thing. If you have got the money and do not want to spend a lot of time maintaining (watering and trimming) real carpet grass, you will be better off with artificial carpet grass. After all, you virtually do not need to take care of your fake grass once it is "installed".
However, do note that artificial carpet grass is not a good long-term investment. No matter how much guarantee and warranty is given, its color will eventually fade and the strands of fake grass will come off. Are you ready to reinvest a lot of money to "install" your expensive fake grass again? Moreover, you will not be getting fresh air and negative ions that real grass could offer. So it is up to you really!
5 Steps To Plant Your Own Carpet Grass
1. Clear all the weeds and stones
Remove all the weeds, stones, rocks, or anything on the plot(s) of land you to plant your carpet grass. If you do not completely remove the roots of the weed, they might return and invade your carpet grass lawn later. Both my dad and I had painstakingly removed everything we could on our own, do check it out in this post. Using weedkiller alone will not be enough, trust me!
2. Measure Your Desired Carpet Grass Lawn Area
Before you could purchase and plant your carpet grass, you will need to measure how much carpet grass you would want your lawn to be covered with. Measure the land area to make it easier for you to buy sand (Yes! sand) and your carpet grass. After doing my calculations, I needed around 600 pieces of carpet grass (2-foot x 1-foot) for a total land area of 1200 square feet.
3. Lay The Sand For Your Carpet Grass
After you have measured the land area of your intended carpet grass, you will need to purchase sand (a lot of sand). Do note that sand is the best soil when it comes to planting your carpet grass. Sand can tremendously improve the drainage and aeration of your carpet grass lawn. In other words, sand is a must-have to help your carpet grass grow healthily. You will then need to decide how thick you want your layer of sand. I have set mine at around 1.5-inch to 2-inch. So eventually I had ordered 5 tonnes of sand which cost me around RM350 (US$85). Once the sand is here, lay it out smoothly. You might want to use a long wooden stick to help you.
Make sure the sand is evenly spread and laid.
Jordan boy and Jasmine girl said they wanted to help. 😀
4. Decide on the Types of Carpet Grass
Once the sand is ready, you will need to start planting your carpet grass as soon as possible. There are many types of carpet grass available in the market and the 4 most common carpet grass are cow grass, pearl grass, Philippine carpet grass, and Japanese carpet grass. You will need to decide on the aesthetic of the grass and of course the cost as well. I wanted to buy Japanese carpet grass which is the most beautiful but it is expensive. Eventually, I have settled for the Philippine carpet grass which is beautiful but not too expensive.
5. Plant Your Carpet Grass On Your Own
I had outsourced my Philippine carpet grass from Kuala Lumpur which is around 130km away from my home in Melaka. However, it is actually cheaper than buying the grass directly in Melaka. Eventually, I only needed to pay RM1,500 (US$360) for 600 pieces of carpet grass with each measuring 2x1 feet. The Philippine carpet grass cost me RM1,200 while the transportation fee was around RM300. Once our pieces of carpet grass had arrived, we quickly plant them, or should I say "install" them. Ha 😂
Our Philippine carpet grass is here!
It was quite easy to plant your carpet grass as you just need to lay them on the sand that you have laid earlier on. This is because each piece of the carpet grass comes with its own layer of soil where the roots are nesting inside. Do not be surprised to see earthworms in the midst of the soil. We spent a few hours laying all the carpet grass. It was indeed a fun family activity for my kids, my wife, and my dad.
Let's plant or "install" our carpet grass!
All our carpet grass has been planted or I mean installed. 😋

They say maintaining it can be quite a chore, gotta weed it regularly...all the unwanted grass popping out everywhere. I know some people give up eventually, let the grass grow as it pleases and just use a mower to mow the lawn.
ReplyDeleteYes, it can be a chore to maintain carpet grass but so far our family kinda enjoy it. Ha :D
DeletePlanted my own carpet grass for my home too. The maintenance tho! :p
ReplyDeleteYeah the maintenance can be quite a chore. LOL :D
DeleteGood that this planting carpet grass is a family activity. Hope it thrives!
ReplyDeleteIt is thriving alright. :)
DeleteHopefully this carpet grass is easy to maintain, hehe :P
ReplyDeleteNot too bad I would say. Just need to water every day. Ha :D
DeleteThat's very nice idea. But maintenance is hard.
ReplyDeleteTrue it takes time and effort to maintain the carpet grass lawn.
DeleteHi, I just planted my Philippine carpet grass too and got them from grass2u too. Would like to ask how is your grass maintenance going on? Any tips to share like fertilising and mowing tools and frequency? Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI am using Apache mower which is not bad. I am doing this on a monthly basis.
DeleteAs for fertilising the grass, it should done sparingly and make sure the fertilisers ar ediluted with water before you actually spray them onto the grass. If you overdo it, your grass will be suffering from "burning" effects.
Hi, you using coarse sand or fine sand?
