As Japanese food lovers, we are always on the hunt for delicious Japanese food in Melaka. Recently, we visited Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka to sample its food. It aims to be one of the best Japanese restaurants in Melaka and so far, many reviews have suggested that it could be. So will it live up to its reputation and challenge Fugo Ryori or Wa Zen for the coveted title-best Japanese restaurant in Melaka? Let's find out.
Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka Review
When Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka has just opened, social media (Facebook groups) in Melaka was abuzz with its arrival. So many Malaccans have recommended this Japanese restaurant with raving reviews. After all, we do not have too many such Japanese restaurants to cater to our palates, no? Naturally, we were intrigued to discover if it is really that good.
Honestly speaking, I am really happy with the opening of Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka as it is just a stone's throw away from my home. In fact, I pass by this restaurant every single day. 😁 Strategically located in Cheng area, this corner lot restaurant is easily accessible via many different routes, making it hard to miss since it is located along the main roads.
Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Decorations
Can you see the special spot with the sakura blooms?
If you visit this restaurant at night, you will be mesmerized by the beautiful and clever use of lighting, especially outside of the restaurant. At the entrance, a Samurai will greet your arrival. You will need to be seated. More importantly, you will need to make a booking before you actually can dine at Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka. Otherwise, you will leave feeling disappointed. That is how famous this restaurant is.
Of Seagulls and Whales
Interesting lighting fixtures!
Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka is a bit small compared to the other more famous Japanese restaurants in Melaka. The seating arrangements might be a bit "cramped" if you ask me. However, with clever use of visual decorations (dangling whales), warm lighting, and the right choices of colour, the whole space looks more spacious, comfortable, and calming. This is the zen ambiance that all Japanese restaurants should have, no?
Once seated, we could either scan a QR code to start ordering or refer to the menu. Of course, we insisted on the menu to have a better view of what we could enjoy. As expected, we truly had a hard time deciding what to eat as there is really a lot to choose from. Thanks to a helpful waitress, we got our orders sorted out.

After placing our orders, we started to admire the beautiful decorations inside Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka. There were lights in the form of whales and seagulls. There was even a special enclave in the restaurant that was decorated with beautiful, vivid blooms of cherry blossoms. The next time I visit this restaurant again, I hope I get to book this special place. Ha 😁
Oshibori-Hot Towels
This is rare
Interestingly, the first plate to land on our table was not food but a plate of Oshibori (hot towels). These hot towels are "Served" for us to clean our hands prior to our dinner. This was definitely a first that no other Japanese restaurants are practising in Melaka. Soon, our Shake Hosomaki (Salmon Sushi Roll) arrived to whet our appetite. I love the fresh raw salmon sushi rolls with wasabi.

Up next was our Kamo Chahan (Smoke Duck Fried Rice). Love this bowl of fried rice with slices of smoked duck. Every grain of the fragrant fried rice was perfectly cooked and dovetailed well with the fried eggs. The addition of chopped spring onion complemented the fried rice. Not bad for our appetisers.

Since it was my special day, I ordered Taraba Temaki (Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab Hand Roll) for myself. I enjoyed the crispy soft shell crab which really combined well with the lettuce, roe, and of course the pearl rice as well as seaweed. With the addition of some wasabi, you would be getting an explosive mixture of flavours and texture in your mouth.

OMG! 🤤
We ordered Unagi Teishoku (Eel Set Meal) for my father. He really enjoyed his healthy Japanese set meal of sliced tender unagi meat, pearl rice, miso soup, chawanmushi, vegetables, and slices of watermelons. I stole one piece of the unagi (perhaps two) and it was really scrumptious. Now I know why it was so expensive.

For Jasmine girl, besides the aforementioned Kamo Chahan, we also ordered Oyakodon (Chicken and Egg Rice Bowl) for her. Do you know that Oyakodon (親子丼) can literally be translated into parent-and-child (Oya-ko) rice bowl (don)? This is because the dish is made up of chicken and egg. This classic comfort food from the Land of the Rising Sun comprises tender slices of chicken, onions, and eggs. They are then simmered with umami-rich sauce before being added to a bowl of steamy hot pearl rice. Jasmine girl really loved this a lot thanks to the umami sauce.

As for Jordan boy who thinks he is like Naruto from Konoha, we ordered Tori Ramen Shiro Dashi Soup (Chicken Ramen Soup). With halves of eggs, tender marinated chicken cutlets, ramen submerged in thick, creamy and flavourful Shiro Dashi broth, this is a must-order if you like to eat ramen. It is always satisfying to enjoy a huge bowl of ramen, right?

My main course was the toothsome Salmon Shiozake Teishoku (salted Salmon Set Meal). Love the brine in my salmon with a hint of teriyaki sauce. I wish the portion of salmon could be bigger. 😂 Then again I really enjoyed the whole teishoku with fragrant pearl rice, miso soup, chawanmushi, salad, and of course, watermelon slices. This is what we call a balanced diet, right?

We did order another 3 side dishes to share among us. The first one was Hawaii Shake Cheese Pizza (Hawaii Salmon Cheese Pizza). Whenever we dine in Japanese restaurants, we would love to order their pizzas. This is because the pizzas are usually different and the pizza crust is usually thinner and crispier. We utterly enjoyed the shreds of salmon and chunks of cheese burnt to perfection to give this pizza its unique texture and taste.

No Japanese food spread is ever complete without an independent plate of huge maki, no? Behold our irresistibly scrumptious Unagi Cheese Maki (Eel Cheese Roll). I must say that we really could not get enough of this combination of cheese and eel wrapped in the firm but fluffy pearl rice with seaweed. I still could not forget the melting cheese and savoury unagi in my mouth. *drooling* 🤤

Our last side order was the peculiar Tuna Handdokeki (Tuna Towels). I must admit that presentation-wise, this did not look like Japanese cuisine. For a moment, it reminded me of scallion pancakes that Jay Chou used to promote. LOL 😂 Don't get me wrong, it still tasted good but perhaps I did not expect it to look the way it was.

As for drinks, we had the usual hot green tea. We did get one glass of free, complimentary chocolate ice cream after we had liked and followed Fujiya's official Facebook page. This barter exchange was not bad at all. All in all, our Japanese dinner was a gratifying one, to say the least.
Is Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka Halal or Not?
To my Muslim friends who love Japanese food, you will be slightly disappointed to know that Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka is not Halal-certified. Then again, rest assured that all the food served and sold is actually pork-free. The only reason why this restaurant does not get any Halal certification is that it serves alcoholic beverages. So if you want to enjoy authentic Japanese food and do not mind the missing halal cert, then this is the Japanese restaurant you should try.
Free Chocolate Desserts
This is delicious!
So will we return to Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka again in the future? I am sure the answer is yes since it is so near to our home. There is no doubt that this newly-opened Fujiya ranks as one of the best Japanese restaurants in Melaka. I believe that Fugo Ryori is still a wee bit better compared to Fujiya. So have you visited Fujiya Japanese Restaurant Melaka? Hopefully, you like my review.
