My family and I really love indulging in Japanese food and in Melaka there are only a few restaurants serving authentic Japanese cuisines. We have previously dined in Fugo Ryori Melaka and after that visit, we decided to patronize Wa Zen Melaka for my wife's birthday. Obviously, this birthday dinner had taken place before the MCO. So how does Wa Zen compare to Fugo Ryori? Let's find out.

Welcome to one of the best Japenese restaurants in Melaka.

If you ask any Japanese food lovers for their recommendations of Japanese cuisines in Melaka, Wa Zen Japanese Melaka is definitely one of the renowned names that will be mentioned along with Fugo Ryori. Interestingly, both of these Japanese restaurants are situated very close to one another in Melaka Raya (Melaka) but I am sure they are not affiliated in any way. Guess, a lot of the good food in Melaka can be found in Melaka Raya.

Zen-like interior design at Wa Zen Melaka

Unlike Fugo Ryori, Wa Zen Melaka seemed to be a bit more spacious compared to the former as the restaurant consists of two conjoined units. Wooden furniture and fixtures can be seen everywhere in Wa Zen Melaka for its decorations and interior design, giving out that zen-like ambiance that is synonymous with Japanese restaurants. Together with the dimly lit atmosphere, you will have a great setting for a romantic dinner.

Wa Zen Melaka prides itself in serving authentic Japanese food and that made ordering what we wanted to eat kind of difficult for us. Looking at the menu confirmed our initial dilemma but still, we have to decide as we only have that much space in our tummies. The first to land on our dining table was Karei Udon (RM18). We particularly love this lip-smacking udon in Japanese-style curry to whet our appetite. It was spicy but just nice for our liking.

Avocado Unagi Maki

Our next Japanese dish was the unbelievably tasty Avocado Unagi Maki (RM28). This certainly had raised my eyebrows. I couldn't believe that this unagi could be so delicious. The reverse rice roll filled with unagi and cheese, topped with avocado and mango. The combination of avocado, mango, and unagi had really brought out that tantalizing fusion aftertaste.

You just can't get enough of Japanese curry

Up next we had the "playful" Yaki Udon (RM22) which your taste buds would surely have fun trying to decipher to ingredients used. Our Japanese-styled fried udon with vegetables and meat was really a delight. Like I have aforementioned, our family is a big fan of spicy food and Japanese curry, so we ordered Katsu Karei Rice (RM22). Nothing beats eating fragrant pearl rice topped with deep fried pork belly and course the curry from the Land of The Rising Sun.

After savouring the Avocado Unagi Maki, we tried another different assortment of Maki. Cut into 8 pieces, the Salmon Tempura Maki (RM24) were really colourful and flavourful. We truly enjoyed our deep fried reverse rice roll filled with crab stick and salmon in batter. So many flavours to enjoy in one single bite...and ouh yeah don't forget to dip it with the refreshingly piquant wassabi.

No feast would be perfect with the addition of one or two side orders right? To satisfy the "gluttons" in us, we ordered a plate of gyoza (RM10) to complement our meal. The fried dumplings were really delectable especially when you dip them into the Japanese soy sauce. We also really liked the crispy and aromatic Bacon Pizza (RM24). Dressed with fish roe and chunks of avocado, the pizza was surprisingly good. Then again, I still prefer the Shake Pizza from Fugo Ryori which was more crispy and luscious.

I guess the 4 of us had walloped quite a lot of food, right? *Buuurppp* Of course, since this was a birthday celebration, we should at least have something sweet at the end, no? The dessert that we ordered was Coco and Vanilla Ice Cream Waffle (RM15) which was a fitting, chilling treat to sump up wifey's dinner. As for beverages, we quenched our thirst and extinguished our flaming taste buds with apple juice, orange juice and not to forget the must have Japanese beverage-hot green tea.

All in all, we truly enjoyed ourselves in Wa Zen Melaka. My wife was of course very happy to be able to celebrate her big day in one of the best Japanese restaurants in Melaka. It is definitely up there along with Fugo Ryori when it comes to mouth-watering authentic Japanese cuisines. If you want to indulge in fresh, scrumptious and "proven" Japanese food, then you really need to give Wa Zen Melaka a try.
