Niantic, the company behind the massively successful Pokémon Go, has announced its next augmented reality game — and it's packed with adorable creatures once again. The game, dubbed Peridot, is all about caring for and breeding magical creatures. Consider Pokémon Go crossed with a Tamagotchi, with some real-world and augmented reality elements thrown in.

According to Niantic, the fundamental premise is as follows: "After thousands of years of dormancy, Peridots are awakening to a world that is radically different from the one in which they once roamed, and they will require your assistance to avoid extinction." In practice, this means that you'll be caring for creatures by training, feeding, and playing with them, assisting them in growing from adorable infants to fully grown adults and eventually breeding more.

Take good care of them!

One of the defining characteristics of Peridots is their uniqueness. They each have a unique appearance — created using a combination of hand-crafted assets and procedural generation — and possess distinct personality traits. They also have their own DNA, according to Niantic, which ties into the breeding aspect, which is "patterned after the way DNA works in real life." There are numerous creature archetypes, such as unicorns and cheetahs, which can be combined during breeding to create entirely new adorable small creatures.

And, despite their status as one-of-a-kind digital assets, the Peridots are not NFTs. It's an extremely intriguing concept and one that Niantic is clearly considering. The company is, however, concentrating on testing and refining the core gameplay experience to ensure it is truly enjoyable and accessible.

Explore the world with your Peridots!

As with Niantic's previous games — most recently, Pikmin Bloom — a large portion of the gameplay requires interaction with the real world. This may entail searching for nests in the wild, which are necessary for breeding or meeting the needs of your Peridot through a walk or the acquisition of specialised food. No feature will die in the world of Peridot even though we are supposed to save them from the verge of extinction. According to reports, this game will be free of punitive elements. That is, the creatures will never perish. Rather than that, we try to incentivize players to return and interact with their creatures more frequently.

You Can Breed Your Own Peridots!

You will have your own grandkids 😂

As expected of any game from Niantic, augmented reality will be the core of Peridot. So you will be seeing your mythical creatures in the real world by using your smartphones. Peridot is being developed on Niantic's Lightship platform, and the developer claims that the game's virtual creatures are capable of "recognising and reacting to various real-world surfaces such as dirt, sand, water, grass, and foliage."

So far Niantic has been focused on games that have been licensed to the company such as Pokémon Go, Harry Potter, Pikmin and the latest one is Transformers. Peridot is notable because it will be the developer's first entirely unique property since Ingress. Here comes the news we have been waiting for: Will it be released in your country? Apparently, Peridot will only be available for download on both the App Store and Google Play this month in selected countries. Sounds like it won't be available to Malaysians for the time being. 😓 For more information, head over to Peridot's official website.
