Apple earns an EXTRA US$6.5 billion by removing chargers and earbuds from its new iPhones. Apple is reported to have made US$6.5 billion (RM27.38 billion) by no longer including chargers and earbuds with its new iPhones. The move announced two years ago in 2020, was meant to decrease waste and earned praise from environmentalists when it claimed it would reduce annual carbon emissions by two million tonnes, the equivalent of removing 500,000 automobiles from the road. But then again it is obvious that this move is driven by corporate greed!

Customers, however, have been smacked in the pocket, according to critics, because the withdrawal of the adapters and earbuds was not accompanied by a price decrease. Apple has charged US$25 for a replacement plug or headphones since 2020. According to critics, if Apple had passed on the entire savings, including an estimated 40% drop in shipping costs due to thinner packaging allowing 70% more devices on each pallet, iPhone pricing would be cheaper.

Prices of iPhones Remain The Same Even Without Chargers and Earbuds

Experts reckon that Apple, whose new iPhones start at around US$2000, could save around US$35 for each phone. The investigation considers that, while the adapters and earbuds retail for US$25, they are significantly less expensive to manufacture. 'Apple is the phone industry market leader in helping the environment, with removing chargers and headphones one of many things it is doing,' said Ben Wood, principal analyst at technology analysts CCS Insight. Of course, Apple saves money by not including chargers and headphones when it sells iPhones.'

Apple is estimated to have sold 190 million iPhones worldwide since announcing the decision. The total gain from removing chargers and earbuds, including lower shipping costs, could be as much as US$6.5 billion, with an additional projected US$293 million from accessory sales. The UK's share is expected to be more than US$365 million.

Apple's head of environment Lisa Jackson had clearly stated in 2020 that the company is aware that consumers have been amassing adapters and that generating even more unnecessary iPhone chargers will only exhaust even more resources and of course, adds to their carbon footprint. 'At Apple, we are continually innovating to conserve resources and protect the world we all share,' said an Apple representative last night.

This significant measure reduced almost 2 million metric tonnes of carbon emissions - the equivalent of eliminating 500,000 automobiles from the road each year - and others are following suit.

Does Apple really care about the environment? I honestly believe Apple has done so for profit instead. Think about it! No price changes even after removing the chargers and earbuds? They could have reduced the price but Apple choose not to. So iPhone buyers will need to fork out extra money for a charger and earbuds that should have been included in the first place? Being driven by more profit, Apple has become one of the most successful companies in the world! That's why I will never ever buy an Apple iPhone. Period
