In my previous post, I mentioned that we were busy painting our new home. Since it was during the pandemic lockdown, we could not hire anyone to help us with the painting. So we painted the whole house on our own. We have decided to use 4 Nippon Paints for our new home. Since this is probably our last home (unless we strike lottery), we wanted to use high-quality paint for our home and hence we chose Nippon Paint.
Using Nippon Paints For Our New Home
Nobody is going to paint their own residential home every single year right? That will be a real hassle. You have to shift the furniture and lots of stuff before you can start painting your house. Don't forget that you need to dust the wall and do some scrapping if it is necessary. Hence, it is better to pay more for high-quality pain like Nippon as it is a long-term investment. In fact, you will save even more money down the road in years to come.
I feel safer using Nippon Paints
Of course, there are other premium paints but we wanted something very reputable and more reliable hence Nippon from the Land of the Rising Sun is our preferred choice of paint. I really thought that Nippon paint comes also the way from Japan. Unfortunately, my perception was wrong as Nippon Paint was actually manufactured locally in Malaysia using Japanese technology. Still, its quality is better (no disrespect) than the rest of the locally made ones.
4 Different Types of Paints For Different Parts of the House
We need different types of paint for different parts of our house. We need different types of paints for the interior, the exterior of the house, and the iron grills just to name a few. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all magic paint. So before doing any painting work on our own, we need to do some research or you can always ask the experts at the hardware stores or paint specialists.
We are not expert painters but still...
Frankly speaking, yours truly me, did not have too much knowledge about painting as my very first house was painted entirely by professional painters. For our second home, we could not outsource help due to the lockdown. That means we have to do everything on our own including paint selection. Hence, I had to consult the expertise of the so-called paint specialist in the hardware store to tell me what was needed. Fortunately, I got all the advice that I needed. Here's a list of what we had used to paint our brand new home.
The 4 Different Nippon Paints For Our New Home
1. White Nippon Paint Satin Glo For Interior
For the inside of our home, we picked the 15-liter Nippon Paint Satin Glo. We want an opulent, classy finishing inside our home hence we picked the white colour of the Satin Glo series. It is claimed that you can get the long-lasting "luxurious feel of satin finish" when you paint the interior walls with these fresh coats of paint.
Choose paint that will not harm the environment and you!
Satin Glo is an acrylic-based paint with non-added lead or mercury which will furnish your wall with a luxurious finish. This premium quality paint is washable, durable, and even resistant to fungus. It is a durable decorative finish specially formulated to provide a smooth mid-sheen finish for the interior walls. The best part is, this Nippon Paint Satin Glo is a green paint that is eco-friendly and will not be detrimental to our health as well.
2. White Nippon Paint Weatherbond For Exterior
As the name suggests, this 18-liter Nippon Paint Weatherbond paint is specially formulated for walls outside your house; or the exterior walls of your home to be precise. That means these walls will be suffering from the wrath of mother nature such as rain, wind, and scorching heat just to name a few. Hence you will need good paint that is resistant to the different tormenting weathers to protect the outside of your home. Hence, we picked Nippon Weatherbond paint.
The "tough" paint to protect the exterior of your house!
Nippon Weatherbond is a pure acrylic-based paint specially formulated for exterior walls. It is extremely durable against harsh weather and adheres well to all types of exterior wall surfaces. The Nippon Weatherbond's breakthrough formula provides even tougher resistance against dirt, fungus, flaking, and even alkali. Though this Weatherbond paint is quite pricey, I feel happy knowing that the "outer layers" of our home are well-protected by a shield.
Last up to 7 years!
Like our Satin Glo Nippon paint, this Weatherbond paint is also green paint without any added lead or mercury. So we don't have to worry about inhaling any harmful gases or substances. Its special formulation also means that it has superior UV protection for longer-lasting colour. That is why Nippon has boldly claimed that this Weatherbond paint can last up to 7 years! I hope it will be more than that. 😂
3. Nippon Paint Gloss Finish For Wood and Metal
As for our wooden doors, planks, and metal surfaces, we had purchased Nippon Paint Gloss Finish for Wood and Metal. This oil-modified alkyd enamel paint is claimed to provide a beautiful mirror gloss finish. It is easy to apply and can form a smooth, tough paint film that has an amazing gloss finish. It will be smooth and shiny for sure!
This special paint will not only provide you with a high-gloss mirror finish, but it is also very durable and is resistant to fungus. Hence, it is ideal for the decoration and protection of both wooden and metal surfaces. This is vital if you want to protect your iron grills or wooden doors which are exposed to sunlight and rain outside your home.
Mirror-like finish!
Also known as "oil paint" by many, this Nippon Paint Gloss Finish for Wood and Metal does not contain any lead or chrome. Rest assured that your wooden fence will not be rotting nor will the metal gates be rusting. On top of that, Nippon promises that the gloss effect can be retained for a long time as well as the vibrancy of the colour. I am glad I have chosen this high-gloss finish paint from Nippon.
4. Nippon Paint Vinelex Wall Sealer
Prior to using Nippon Satin Glo and Nippon Weatherbond paints, I have used this Nippon Paint Vinelex Wall Sealer as the base. Apparently, by applying this coating of sealer(s), your paint will last longer. It is an acrylic water-based sealer that is suitable for both exterior and interior walls. I have used this sealer especially on "naked" walls that have never been painted with anything before.
Start from scratch
As I have aforementioned, Nippon Paint Vinelex Wall Sealer has been formulated specifically to protect your finishing coats against the detrimental effects of milk alkalinity and moisture from the substrate. This is quite a versatile wall sealer if you ask me. It can be used on plastered walls, ceilings, brickwork, hardboard, soft-board, and even asbestos.
Surface Preparation-What To Do Before Painting?
This is perhaps the most important step before we even start painting. Before we apply any paint, prep your walls or surfaces so that they will be ready to "welcome" the paint. Remember to remove all loose, defective paint or powdery residues first. We did this by using moistened sponges and patiently removed any of that dirt still clinging onto the walls.
Cellulose Fillers For Cement and Wood Surfaces
If there are cracks or uneven surfaces, you can always use cellulose filler for cement and wood surfaces. I bought the normal fillers that I could find. Of course, if you want you can use Nippon Multi-purpose Joint Compound as fillers but I doubt I saw this. Still, any fillers will do the work.
After that, you can use sandpapers to smoothen the putty or filler areas. Remember that all surfaces to be painted must be cleaned thoroughly and dry, be free from dirt, grease, or any foreign matter before you start painting. It is also crucial to let all surfaces dry completely prior to any painting work or all your handwork will go down the drain. Reminder: Avoid painting when the moisture content and alkalinity of the walls are still high.
P.S.: White colour paints are more expensive than the other coloured ones as white is the most in-demand colour.
Your kitchen cabinet is red + white, mine is fully red, the same red tone :)
