Last year might have been a disastrous one for a lot of us but then again there is always a silver lining to everything. For starters, if you are reading this, it means you are still alive and kicking. So have you set your new year's resolutions for the brand new year? If you have had, how do you plan to stick to them and eventually achieve your new year's resolutions? We know that it is not easy to even draw out a list of new year's resolutions, let alone keep them right?
Then again, I believe that a lot of our so-called new year's resolutions for the previous year had not been made invalid, right? So all we have to do is transfer them to our brand new list. The year 2021 will, by and large, remain the same as we still need to live with the Covid-19 virus; We still need to adhere to SOPs of wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. In view of these new norms, our new year's resolutions need to be slightly different with some tweaks and adjustments as well.
7 Tips To Achieve Your New Year's Resolutions
1. Set Thrilling Missionized Resolutions
It is time to transform your new year's resolutions into missions; It is time to gamify your goals to make it even more exciting. Instead of just writing that you want to lose weight or slim down, you should turn your resolutions into missions. For example, aim to go jogging at least three times a week and each session should be around 20 minutes. Plan to hit the gym during weekends and spend at least 30 minutes during each of your visits. Aim to take part in a marathon competition and then train to run the required distance. When your resolutions sound like missions, then you will be even more excited to soldier on, right?
2. Strategize Your Missions
This is necessary if you plan to prevail in your war. In order to win the war, you will first need to be victorious in your battles. In order to do that, you will need to have strategies to help you advance to the next level right? For example, if you plan to participate in a marathon competition, your end goal would be the ability to run a whopping 42.2km right? Start off by completing to run 5KM in January, 10KM in March, 30KM in July and by November you should be able to complete 40KM. Step by step you will be able to prep yourself for the final "war". When you have a specific blueprint, you would be able to carry out your plans.
3. Visualize Your Desired Outcome
Always strive to begin with the end in mind. When you can visualize your desired outcome, it will be easier for you to be motivated to achieve them. Knowing how much you will be handsomely rewarded will spur you to plan wisely and work harder to accomplish all your mini-missions and eventually conquer the final battle to clinch the war. In fact, you can also write down the rewards you will be reaping at the end of completed missions. Paste it on the wall to be your constant reminder.
4. Be Flexible & Versatile
Sometimes what you have planned might not materialize the way you wanted it to be; Sometimes your hard work might not be equal to your desired outcome. Then again that should not deter you from achieving your final goal. For example, you might have trained to run 5km non-stop but end up only running up to 4km. Instead of being discouraged by your setbacks, you should give yourself a pat at the back. Then move on and hit the reset button. Rethink how you can accomplish your next goal with a better plan. Go back to the drawing board. Be flexible and versatile. As long as you don't give up, you will eventually achieve your target.
5. Learn From Mistakes
Everyone is bound to make mistakes. Instead of wallowing in self-criticism, it is even more important to know what has gone wrong. Know that each failure brings you one step closer to your desired success. Always view the glass as half-full and know that there is a silver lining in everything. Your mistakes will actually serve as a great teacher to help you navigate around bigger problems in the future. As the saying goes, "Adversity has its advantages." The failure that you have to face today will give you an edge in the future, granted that you learn from it.
6. Take Advantage of Technology
There is no doubt that advancement in technology has distracted a lot of people from accomplishing their goals. Technology is a double-edged sword; But if you "Wield it" correctly, technology can bring a lot of benefits as well. You can use fitness bands to help you keep fit; You can use apps to remind you of important dates and schedules. You can also stay focused with helpful apps such as Pomodoro Tracker and even with the Focus Mode of smartphones. Hence you should take advantage of your available tools to help you move closer to your targets.
7. Reward Yourself
Always reward yourself for the little accomplishments that you have achieved. When you enjoy yourself for the little things that you have done, you will be even more motivated to scale higher and head towards your eventual goal. 365 days in a year is one heck of a long journey, therefore it makes perfect sense to have mini "badges" to sustain you throughout your expedition, right? So don't forget to give yourself a little reward now and then.
