Well not everyone of us can fork out a fortune to own a flagship device that will cost at least RM2,500. But that does not mean that we should be deprived of smartphones that possess great performance but at the same only cost a fraction of the premium price tag, right? Enter Redmi Note 9 Pro which is probably the best smartphone under RM1000 right now with awesome specs, huge screen and long-lasting battery. The official release of Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max indicates that Xiaomi intends to rule the mid-range market with top notch specs with a cheap price tag that commoners can afford. 👍

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max
Redmi Note 9 Pro Max is the more premium of the two variants and it has slightly larger beautiful 6.67-inch Full HD+ display with a punch-hole camera. It is powered by Snapdragon 720G processor that can be paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. The good news this time is that there is the inclusion of triple-tray slot which will enable you to use two nano sim cards at the same time plus a microSD slot for your extra storage needs.

The huge 6.67-inch display pushes 1080x2400 pixels with 395 ppi density and the screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Flip it to the rear, you will see the symmetrical 3D curved glass design and a 2x2 camera cluster which resembles the one seen on the Huawei Mate 20 Series. Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner has been moved to the side instead, giving the back design a cleaner look. We are hoping that they could cram in in-display fingerprint scanner but that will mean extra cost.

Speaking about the camera, Redmi Note 9 Pro Max's quad-camera cluster is made up of 64MP f/1.89 main camera with a huge 1/1.7" sensor. The other 3 cameras are a 2MP depth sensor, 8MP f/1.89 ultra-wide angle camera and a 5MP macro camera. Telephoto lens is absent but you can still get 10x zoom digitally. With the Note 9 Pro Max, you can record 4K videos at 30fps as well as shooting 960fps slow-mo in 720p. Flip it to the front and you will be greeted by a 32MP selfie camera that actually supports Super Pixel Feature for all those selfies in low light condition. You can shoot 1080p videos an slow-mo videos at 120fps by using the selfie camera. Not bad at all if you ask me for a budget phone!

Whopping fast 33W fast charging!

If long-lasting battery life is what you are looking for in a smartphone, then you will love the huge 5,020mAh battery that Note 9 Pro Max possess. It charges via USB-C and supports 33W fast charging: you can charge from 0-50% in just 30 minutes! Wow! There is also the inclusion of the rare 3.5mm headphone jack and an IR blaster which is located at the top of the smartphone. Sounds like one of the best smartphones under RM1,000 so far in 2020, right?

Redmi Note 9 Pro
Though it lacks the "Max", Redmi Note 9 Pro is still a high-performing budget smartphone. Here's the good news: It still RETAINS the same 6.67-inch Full HD+ display, the exact Snapdragon 720G processor and of course that huge 5,020mAh battery pack. Guess Redmi decided not to shortchange its fans after all huh. The maximum RAM configuration is 6GB instead of the 8GB that the more premium Max model has. On top if that to justify the cheaper price tag, you will have to be contend with the 48MP main rear camera with a smaller 1/2.25" sensor and 16MP selfie camera. Still, I believe the base model is really good enough for most users with limited budget.

Another key difference for Redmi Note 9 Pro is you will only have the 18W fast charger instead of the 33W fast charging capability that comes with the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max. If this is a deal-breaker for you, I will urge you to opt for the Max variant instead just by adding another RM58. Why not right? Both Redmi Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro Max support Bluetooth 5.0, 802.11ac WiFi and 2x2 WiFi MIMO. Unfortunately both of them lack NFC support that I believe is still relatively negligible in Malaysia for now. It is good to know that Redmi has also included P2i nano-coating for both models to prevent against accidental spills and splashes; However you cannot bring them for a swim as it is not water resistance.

Redmi Note 9 Pro
4GB RAM + 64GB storage: RM748
6GB RAM + 128GB storage: RM920

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max
6GB RAM + 64GB storage: RM862
6GB RAM + 128GB storage: RM978
8GB RAM + 128GB storage: RM1,093

All in all, it is obvious that Xiaomi will be winning a lot of fans with both Redmi Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro MAX as both models tick all the boxes for high-performing budget smartphones. The inclusion of a Snapdragon processor, big display, huge long-lasting battery, upgraded cameras, microSD card support and a headphone jack will surely make a lot of fans gleefully happy.
