Huawei has finally unveiled their latest top of the line smartphone which focuses on photography. But before we begin, do know that for this year's edition of flagships from Huawei there will be 3 different variants (P40, P40 Pro & P40 Pro+) instead of just two like their predecessors. The 3 different models correspond with the different camera setups. Interested to get one of these new camera-centric smartphones? Here are 10 things that you should know about Huawei P40:
10 Things You Should Know About Huawei P40:
1. Screen Size(s)
Huawei P40 (Basic): 6.1-inch OLED display with 2340x1080 resolution.
Huawei P40 Pro: 6.58-inch OLED display with 2640x1200 resolution.
Huawei P40 Pro+: 6.58-inch OLED display with 2640x1200 resolution
Huawei P40 Pro+: 6.58-inch OLED display with 2640x1200 resolution
If you consume a lot of visual media using your smartphone, it will be preferable for you to get the Pro and Pro+ versions instead.
2. Triple, Quad or Penta Rear Cameras?
The Huawei P40 comes with triple-camera setup while P40 Pro is equipped with quad-camera setup and the most advanced P40 Pro+ features an amazing Penta-camera Setup. So if you can afford the more premium price tag, you will be able to have better quality of cameras at your disposal, 5 to be exact.
As for selfie camera, all 3 variants sport a 32MP front-facing camera and an IR sensor for better facial recognition capabilities.
3. UltraVision Leica Main Camera
All three different variants of the P40 come equipped with 50MP f/1.9 "UltraVision" main cameras with Optical Image Stabilization and advanced "Octa-Phase Detection" autofocus for ultra fast focus in low light.
Huawei P40 (Basic):
50MP main camera + 15MP Ultra-wide angle camera + 8MP telephoto lens.
Huawei P40 Pro:
50MP main camera + 40MP Ultra-wide Cine Camera + 12MP "SuperSensing" telephoto lens + 3D ToF sensor.
Huawei P40 Pro+:
50MP main camera + 40MP Ultra-wide Cine Camera + 10X Optical Telephoto + 3X Optical Telephoto +3D ToF sensor
4. 50X SuperSensing Zoom
You would have known by now that all the smartphone makers are focusing on ZOOM these days. Huawei P40 Pro comes with SuperZoom periscope design which allows it to capture 40% more light thanks to its 50MP main camera and 12MP telephoto camera. The 12MP telephoto camera can support up to 5X optical zoom. On the other hand, Huawei P40 Pro+ is capable of 10X Optical Zoom, 20X Hybrid Zoom and a maximum of 100X Zoom. This of course makes it on par with Samsung's latest flagship Galaxy S20 Ultra.
100X Zoom to capture everything!
5. Water Resistance For All 3 Models
It is a good news indeed to note that all the variants of Huawei P40 are water resistant. However the basic model of P40 only comes with IP53 water resistance while the other two variants (P40 Pro & P40 Pro+) will be equipped with IP68 water resistance. At least all 3 models will be more "hydrophilic" now.
6. 90Hz High Refresh Rate Display
It makes perfect sense to launch display with 90Hz refresh rate which is supposed to be the bare minimum for flagship devices. Only the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ variants will be enjoying this upgrade. Then again the other smartphone makers have already fitted in 120Hz display for their flagship devices. So Huawei is basically playing catch up. The basic model of Huawei P40 will only be getting a normal 60Hz display.
Support for WiFi 6+-with 2.4Gbps
7. WiFi 6+ Support
All 3 models of Huawei P40 will be supported by WiFi 6+ which is the highest WiFi standard to date (correct at the time of writing) with a whopping speed of up to 2.4Gbps. On paper this does seem like amazingly fast. I am glad that all 3 models will be enjoying this WiFi 6+ technology instead of just the premium variants. Phew!
Charge Wirelessly from 0-65% in 30 minutes for Huawei P40 Pro+ 😱
8. 40W SuperCharging
The premium P40 Pro+ will be enjoying 40W SuperCharging not only for wired charging but also wireless charging. Interestingly you will need a special SuperCharge charger and cable which are not included (optional) 😂. Unfortunately the other 2 watered down models will not be able to enjoy the 40W SuperCharging technology. The mid-tier P40 Pro can be charged wirelessly at 27W while the basic model will only support 22.5W cable charging. So only P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ will support wireless charging and of course reverse wireless charging with other compatibles devices. Hence if you do not want to be plugged to the walls all the time you might opt for P40 Pro or P40 Pro+.
Wireless charging at 40W which is really superfast!
9. NO Google Mobile Services (GMS)
If you are someone who is so used to Google Mobile Services (GMS), do note that all your favourite apps such as GMail, Google Map, and Youtube just to name a few will not come preinstalled out of the box. Instead you will need to rely on Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). Of course you can install these Google apps on your own through other means. So if you are OK with that, then you can consider getting yourself a Huawei P40.

10. Pricing
As usual, pricing of the devices will be the deciding factor when it comes to making decisions.
Huawei P40(Basic): 8GB RAM + 128GB storage - RM3,699
Huawei P40 Pro: 8GB RAM + 256GB storage - RM4,699
Huawei P40 Pro+: 8GB RAM + 512GB storage - RM6,699
Like I have often suggested, always invest in better cameras and that is why it will make better sense to splurge your cash for the premium Huawei P40 Pro+ to fully enjoy advanced photography capabilities.
