It is unbelievable that the Tesco Malaysia that we know and love has ceased to exist. All Tesco Malaysia stores will have a new name real soon. Tesco Malaysia name is now changed to Lotuss Stores. Goodbye to you my old friend. I know that Tesco has been sold to a Thailand company last year and I was hoping that its name will be retained. However, that's not the case and the eventual name change has happened.
Tesco Malaysia Name Is Now Changed To Lotuss Stores
Goodbye Tesco Malaysia
On the 9th of March 2020, Tesco Malaysia was acquired by Thailand's Charoen Pokphand Retail Development Company (CPRD) with a price tag of RM43.1 billion. Besides Tesco Malaysia, all Tesco retail outlets in Thailand have been sold as well by the parent company of Tesco. It has been reported that in recent years Tesco Malaysia has recorded staggering losses. Hence the selling of Tesco Malaysia and Thailand will allow the Tesco UK to better focus its business in England.
Why Tesco Malaysia's Name Is Changed To Lotuss?
The acquisition of Tesco Malaysia has been given the green light by the Malaysia Trade Competition Commission (MTCC) several months ago back in November 2020. However, we are still in the dark about whether Tesco Malaysia's name will be changed to Tesco Lotus or Lotuss. Which do you prefer? It appears that the latter will be a more possible change just like the ones in Thailand. This will, of course, bolster regional branding across Malaysia and Thailand too.
Will Malaysians Love The New Tesco's Name?
Surely many will miss the old Tesco right.
Honestly speaking, my family and I are quite sad to know that our favourite hypermarket Tesco will now be called Lotuss. After all, it is just a stone's throw away from our home and we did do our weekly groceries shopping there. It is inevitable that there will be changes to the new Tesco aka Lotuss and I believe the new owner would want to give its new business a fresh breath of air.
So Tesco Extra will be called Tesco Lotus Extra?
As I have aforementioned, Tesco Malaysia was a loss-making business and I believe the new owner would want to shake things up. Will there be huge changes in management? Will staffing across all levels be affected? As for the consumers, will we be able to enjoy more varieties of products and better pricing? I foresee that the new Tesco Malaysia or Lotus's will be targeting the same demographic of customers to maximize its profits.
New Lotus's Will Be Everywhere In Malaysia Soon
What Does Lotus's Mean?
Do you know that the "drop pin" that you see in the logo "Lotus's" signifies that Lotus's your one-stop place for everything you need? The S at the end stands for "Smart'' in all aspects, powered by four different aspects namely total smart supply chain and innovative products; seamless omnichannel experience; integrated technology and data innovation and committed sustainability living. So we can expect a livelier and more vibrant shopping experience at the new Tesco soon. I mean Lotus's!
Watch this Chinese New Year advertisement which is their last!
I am sure we could sense a dense air of melancholy surrounding a lot of Malaysians for now. Then again, this is the nature of business. The only constant is change, right? I know a lot will still be calling the new Lotus's as Tesco. Still, I believe that we could be seeing new dawn and perhaps it is time for us to embrace the new Lotus's. Do you have any expectations? More importantly, do you like the new name change from Tesco Malaysia to Lotuss Stores?
The s's is gonna cause a lot of confusions.
