Finally we got to enjoy the street food at Chulia Street in Penang. When we visited the island previously, we always seemed to miss this food paradise. This time we ensured that we made this gastronomical trip of ours. The Chulia Street Night Hawker Stalls have been one of the attractions for foodies both locally and tourists. Yes! Even Penangites themselves could be seen crowding the stalls to enjoy their very own local food. This goes to show how delicious these cuisines are.

Before the sun begins to set, Chulia Street will come alive with hawkers setting up their push-cart stalls at their very own respective spots. Very quickly, the tables and chair will be arranged and in no time the crowd will start to gather. Chulia Street Night Hawker Stalls will start at 6 p.m. daily and call it a day by midnight. You are advised to be there early or you will have to wait for quite some time before there will be vacant table for you to be seated. Knowing how popular this place would be, we departed from our beachfront accommodation earlier.

Once we arrived, we were rewarded with a vacant table right behind the famous wan tan mee stall. True enough, the whole place was brimming with hungry food lovers both locally and abroad. Soon, a lot of people were lining up to wait for their turn to be seated. Immediately, we headed to the different stalls and placed orders for the food that we wanted to try. I believe in total there were at least 10 hawker stalls selling food that evening. I understand that there should be more stalls no thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic and movement control order restrictions.

All in all, we ordered 5 different food to gratify our hunger pangs. Our afternoon visit to Fort Cornwallis had really burnt a lot of our calories. The first food to land on our table was the famous Hainanese Satay. Having eaten chicken satay quite often, we tried their pork satay. However we did not just feast on any ordinary pork satay, ours were skewers of grilled wild boar meat. The meat was really tender and the peanut sauce really elevated the authentic flavour of the grilled wild boar meat.

You will love the Wok Hei of the Char Kway Teow

No menu in Penang would be complete without the household Char Kway Teow right? Our plate of wok-fried char kway teow was reasonably good. Every strand of the noodle and the 2 juicy prawns were well coated with the sauce. It was scrumptious we liked its Wok Hei fragrance. However we thought that the Char Kway Teow that we had earlier at Kedai Kopi Ho Ping was tastier. Still, I would say that the whole package met our expectations.

We also had a plate of Hokkien Noodles which I thought was really great even though at first glance...it did not look appetizing at all. The moment we had our first bite, immediately we knew it would be a luscious plate of Hokkien Noodles. The texture of the noodles were just nice-al dente and while the broth was thick and bursting with that unmistakable familiar flavours. My wife was really full of praise for this plate of ordinary-looking Hokkien Noodles.

Duck Meat Koay TeowTh'ng (soup)

Our next dish was something that we didn't know what to expect as it we had never tried it before. Enter Duck Meat Koay TeowTh'ng (soup). Usually I had my reservations for something soupy. It was supposed to be bland, or so I thought. It turned out to be rich and very tasty. Generous strips of meat and fish balls were also added, much to our delight. Guess I should not judge my food too soon huh!

Lor Bak is a must-try food in Penang

Last but not least, we ordered the famous Lor Bak. With various ingredients for you to choose, you literally have to think twice or thrice what should end up in your tummy. Lor Bak is undoubtedly one of must-have food when you are in Asia right? Choose to indulge in the fried sausages, tofu, prawn fritters, pandan chicken and fish cakes just to name a few. You could eat fried delicacies with the mixture of cinnamon and soy sauce or the chili sauce if you want something spicier. Obviously Jordan boy and Jasmine girl really loved deep-fried food a lot!

All in all, our visit to Chua Street was a rewarding one indeed. Then again it was a shame that we could not try the famous wan tan mee as the queue was literally too long. Yupe! Whether you want to dine in or take away, you still need to line up to enjoy the wan tan mee. Guess it is really, really that good huh! Too bad our stomachs could no longer take in any extra food, otherwise we would love to try the highly rated "Muah Chee" and "Apom" as well. For those who are wondering what and where to eat in Penang, you really need to be here. In fact, I would say that Chulia Street Night Hawker Stalls serve some of the best street food in Penang for dinner time.
