Designing a PCB can take a lot of time and creative energy. Due to this, you want to make sure that you are always using the best tool for the job. Even if you have been using the same software for years, you might find that it doesn’t do everything you want it to. When this occurs, you need to make sure that you recognise the signs that you need a new software instead of forcing yourself to struggle with the old. Let’s take a look at what some of those signs might be.
The Software Frustrates You
Straight away, if you find your current software frustrating then you need to start looking for a replacement. PCB design requires a lot of patience and you will not be able to concentrate properly if all you can focus on is how the software is not performing how you would like it to. Instead of focusing on this issue, take a look instead at some of the other options out there for you.
The Transition Will Be Easy
Many PCB design softwares actually have the capabilities to support other users. For example, you might find a transition from the PCB design software Eagle to be much easier than you might have thought. You will be able to bring across any old schematics you might have and import them into the new software.
You may also find that many of the skills you learned for the PCB design software Eagle apply to the new software. With a quick testing period, you should have no trouble picking up designing again and continuing as you have done before.
The Software Can’t Support Your Needs
It might be as simple a case as just realising that the PCB you need to design far exceeds the capabilities of your current software. In this scenario, you may not have a choice except to find a new software. While you could potentially simplify the design depending on the project, that also means that you run the risk of limiting yourself as a designer.
For example, you might need to design an extremely complex PCB which requires a multi-layer design. Your current design software might only limit you to a few layers or it simply might not have the processing power to be able to produce the results you need. Don’t limit your own abilities. Make the switch to another PCB designer which will be able to give you the support you need.
Deciding to switch to different design software is never going to be an easy decision. You always need to make sure that you can keep on top of what you need out of a design software. If it seems like something is not responding the way you want it to, you should definitely think about switching to a new software. You might even be able to track down one which you find entirely more intuitive to use.
