A decade ago, the original Microsoft Surface made its debut and demonstrated the viability of a Windows tablet. It has now been replaced by the Surface Pro lineup, and the Redmond behemoth has today unveiled the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 5G series, its latest flagship tablet.

The most significant change is that the Surface Pro 9 is now available with both an Intel-powered version and an ARM-powered version, dubbed the Surface Pro 9 with 5G. The latter is considered the successor to the earlier Surface Pro X series, which also utilised ARM CPUs. The Surface Pro 9 with 5G will this time include the Microsoft SQ 3 CPU, which is essentially a modified version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 system-on-chip. In addition to the Microsoft SQ 3 chip, there is an extra neural processor that provides additional functionality, such as increased real-time video conferencing background blurring.

Meanwhile, the standard Surface Pro 9 will include either the Intel Core i5-1235U or the Intel Core i7-1255U from the 12th generation. They will have up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to a 1TB SSD, whereas the Surface Pro 9 with 5G will include 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to a 512GB SSD. To clarify, despite the variations under the hood, both the Intel and SQ 3 variants of the Surface Pro 9 will utilise the exact same aluminium chassis measuring 9.3mm in thickness and weighing just 879g and 880g, respectively.

Microsoft has equipped the Surface Pro 9 series with a 13-inch, 2880-by-1920-pixel PixelSense Flow display with the now-iconic 3:2-aspect ratio. It features 10-point multitouch compatibility, adaptive colour, a contrast ratio of 1200:1, and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for scratch resistance. The Surface Pro 9 powered by Intel will also include a dynamic refresh rate of up to 120Hz. It will also be compatible with the Surface Slim Pen 2 stylus and the Surface Pro keyboard that attaches via a pogo pin. As usual, a kickstand is located behind the device to prop up the display.

Other notable characteristics include a battery life of up to 15.5 hours on the Surface Pro 9, with the more efficient ARM processor able to power the Surface Pro 9 with 5G for up to 19 hours. There is also Windows Hello authentication using the FHD webcam in the front and a 10MP camera on the back. The Surface Pro 9 series also has a pair of 2W stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, a dual far-field studio microphone setup, and compatibility for WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.1; of course, the Surface Pro 9 with 5G supports 5G as well. The Surface Pro 9 features two USB-C 4.0 connectors, while the Surface Pro 9 with 5G has two USB-C 3.2 ports and a SIM card slot. Both contain the Surface Connect port for charging.

The Surface Pro 9 will be available in Forest, Platinum, Sapphire, and Graphite, whereas the Surface Pro 9 will only be offered in Platinum. Additionally, there will be a special edition Surface Pro keyboard with a vivid blue floral pattern inspired by Windows 11 Bloom. It will only be offered in select areas while supplies last and were designed by the London design studio Liberty. Local availability and pricing are yet unknown, however, in the United States, the Surface Pro 9 will start with a price tag of US$999.99 (RM4,699) and the Surface Pro 9 with 5G will start at US$1,299.99 (RM6,099).
