Fresh off writing about the Coros Nomad: The GPS Watch Built for Anglers and Explorers, I couldn’t resist writing about another rugged wearable making waves in the adventure tech space. Behold the Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro.

If you’ve been keeping an eye on outdoor-oriented smartwatches, you might’ve noticed a growing arms race. More rugged builds, longer battery life, better mapping features… and in Amazfit’s case, a flashlight strapped to your wrist. Yes, really. But is this just a gimmick or a genuinely useful feature for adventurers? Let’s dig in.

A Quick Rundown: What’s New in the Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro

After weeks of speculation and leaked images floating around the internet, Amazfit has officially released the T-Rex 3 Pro in Europe. And it’s clear this is not just a cosmetic update. In fact, we’re looking at serious hardware improvements and functional changes over the standard T-Rex 3.

Here’s the hero stat sheet straight from launch:

  • Sizes: 44mm & 48mm
  • Colors: Tactical Black, Black/Gold, and Gold/Grey
  • Displays:
    • 44mm: 1.32-inch AMOLED
    • 48mm: 1.5-inch AMOLED
    • Both with blinding 3,000 nits peak brightness (up from 2,000 nits)

  • Materials: Sapphire glass protection & titanium alloy bezels/buttons
  • Battery:
    • 44mm (640 mAh): 19 days typical use
    • 48mm (700 mAh): 25 days typical use
  • Navigation: Upgraded GPS antenna supporting six satellite systems
  • Sports modes: 180+ including Rucking
  • Special features: Built-in dual-color flashlight (with SOS mode), Bluetooth calling, offline apps, BioCharge Energy metric

On paper, it’s a tank with brains. Obviously, it is designed to perform in the harshest conditions without skimping on smart features.

That Flashlight Feature: More Than a Party Trick

Let’s be honest: when I first heard “built-in flashlight on a smartwatch,” my initial thought was, neat, but will I ever use it? Then I remembered how many times I’ve fumbled for my phone in a dark tent or during a night hike. Suddenly, it made perfect sense.

Here’s what it does:

  • Dual-color light: Switch between a bright white beam for visibility and a softer, color-optimized mode to preserve night vision.
  • SOS function: A pulsing emergency signal if you’re lost or in distress. That could matter a lot more than people think when traveling solo or in unpredictable environments.

It’s definitely not going to replace a full-blown flashlight for wilderness expeditions, but as an always-there backup, it earns its keep.

Display & Build: Tough as Nails, Clear as Day

If you’ve ever tried to read your smartwatch under blazing sunlight, you’ll appreciate the jump to 3,000 nits peak brightness on the T-Rex 3 Pro. That’s 50% brighter than the T-Rex 3, and frankly, this could make a massive difference for trail runners and mountaineers who don’t have the luxury of shade.

Paired with sapphire glass, which is second only to diamond in hardness...rest assured that scratches from rock faces, sand, or accidental drops are far less likely. And those titanium alloy bezels and buttons? Not just for aesthetics; they shave off weight while boosting durability.

Battery Life That Outlasts Your Adventure

The T-Rex 3 Pro’s battery stats are nothing short of impressive.

  • 19 days for the smaller 44mm model is already beyond what most AMOLED-based smartwatches can dream of.
  • 25 days for the 48mm variant is, frankly, insane, especially given the high-brightness display and GPS features.

For ultramarathoners, long-distance trekkers, or even folks who just hate charging gadgets, this is a breath of fresh air. You could finish a two-week expedition without packing the charging cable.

Sports & Tracking: For Every Athlete Out There

If you’re into variety, Amazfit has you covered with over 180 sports modes. Sure, there’s the standard running, cycling, swimming, and hiking, but also more specialized activities:

  • Rucking (weighted backpack hiking)
  • Skiing
  • Rowing
  • Triathlon
  • Strength training programs

The upgraded GPS antenna is worth highlighting. Being equipped with improved accuracy even in dense forests or urban canyons is no small feat. Paired with automatic route planning, the watch can map a loop for you based on your intended distance and direction, even in offline mode.

Add in integrations with Intervals.icu and other third-party fitness apps, and you’ve got a seriously flexible training companion.

Health & Recovery: BioCharge Energy

It wouldn’t be 2025 without some fancy biometric tracking metric, right? Amazfit’s new BioCharge Energy feature works a bit like Garmin’s Body Battery. It estimates your recovery status after workouts, tracking both exertion and rest so you can avoid overtraining.

Combined with the usual lineup of heart rate, SpO₂, sleep, and stress tracking, it’s a well-rounded health suite.

Price, Availability & What’s Next

For now, Europe gets first dibs. The 48mm Tactical Black is available immediately at €399.90 via Amazfit’s online store and Amazon. The Black/Gold variant of the 48mm arrives September 25, 2025, with the 44mm Black/Gold and Gold/Grey models dropping soon after. All are priced the same.

No word yet on the Malaysia release date, but given Amazfit’s track record, it probably won’t be too far behind.

My Take: Who Is This Watch For?

If the Coros Nomad calls to dedicated anglers and wilderness specialists, the Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro feels like the all-rounder. It's durable enough for a jungle trek, smart enough for city life, and with enough battery to laugh at camping trips.

The built-in flashlight might sound like a novelty, but in real-world use, it’s one of those “why doesn’t every adventure watch have this?” features. Then there’s the GPS capability, recovery tracking, and ultra-bright screen. This is the kind of smartwatch you’d want if you refuse to compromise between toughness and smarts. I really hope I could review this rugged smartwatch once it hits Malaysia! For more information, head over to Amazfit's official website.

Over to You:

Would you splurge on the Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro for your next big trip, or is the flashlight still a little too “gadgety” for your taste? Share your thoughts. And, if you’ve used Amazfit before, how did it handle in the real world?
