I am glad that both my Jordan boy and Jasmine have completed the 2-dose of Covid-19 vaccines for kids under 12 years old. Yes! In Malaysia, children under the age of 12 can get their Covid-19 vaccines already which started in February 2022. Now everyone in my family has been "fully" vaccinated against the much-dreaded Covid-19 virus.

Though kids under the age of 12 could only get 2 doses of the Pfizer vaccines, it is still better than nothing at all, right? With both our boy son and daughter being vaccinated, we have more peace of mind when we bring them out for vacations or for our food hunt. Now our family outings will be more enjoyable, knowing that we are all relatively protected against our long-time nemesis-Covid-19 pandemic.

So have your children been vaccinated? Despite our Malaysian government offering the Covid-19 vaccinations for FREE, many Malaysians are still reluctant to be jabbed. According to the Covid Now statistics tabulated by our government (16th of May 2022), only 29.8% of Malaysian children under the age of 12 are fully vaccinated (2 doses)! When I saw this figure, I was shocked and shook my head in disbelief! Why aren't parents bringing their children for their Covid-19 vaccinations?

Why are parents reluctant to get their children under the age of 12 to be vaccinated? Is it because of the fear of side effects? Is it because of unfounded religious reasons? Or is it purely because of ignorance? No matter what the reasons, I can't help but feel that parents who have refused to bring their children for vaccinations are indirectly harming them. What if these innocent unvaccinated children get infected by the Covid-19 virus?

The moment when we know that Covid-19 vaccines will be available for kids under 12, we immediately got them registered via MySejahtera App. I even took 2 annual leaves just to bring them for their vaccinations. No hesitation at all as my children are my number 1 priority. They are my responsibility. In no time, to our delight, we got their appointments.

The nearest Covid-19 vaccination centre for kids near us is in KipMall Melaka. I understand that some claim there are not as many vaccination centres for kids under the age of 12 compared for adults. However, a lot of proactive schools have arranged for their students to get jabbed in the school itself. Hence, there should be no excuse for parents who are not bringing their children to get jabbed.

For the uninitiated, KipMall Melaka has been designated as one of the official vaccination centres for kids under 12 in Melaka. Hence, that morning when we lined up there were really many parents with the children. As usual, we followed the SOPs by keeping our physical distance, wearing masks and waiting patiently. However, the whole process was pretty quick thanks to the efficiency of those who were manning the centre.

I must applaud the people who were on duty at the vaccination centre for their amazing work rate and professionalism. There were different stations for both parents and kids. From completing the necessary documents, and registration to getting the doctor's approval; everything was completed relatively quickly. I would say the Covid-19 vaccination for both my kids was pretty smooth. Sure there were one or two children who cried but overall all the kids were mentally ready to get jabbed!

Pfizer vaccines (now marketed as Cormirnaty vaccine) have been chosen for the vaccinations of kids under the age of 12. I am relieved that the government has selected this vaccine instead of the alternatives even though it costs more. I am sure a lot of parents prefer this vaccine to other not-so-favourable ones. At least, statistically, the Pfizer vaccine has proven to be more effective and it has fewer side effects too if any. Moreover, only 1/3 of the Pfizer vaccine is being administered for inoculation.

Honestly speaking, both Jordan boy and Jasmine girl were perfectly fine after they had been injected with the Pfizer vaccines. There were literally no side effects at all based on my observations. They did not have any fever at all and were happily playing and chatting like they always do. So if you ask me, I think Pfizer vaccines for kids under the age of 12 years old will cause mild to zero side effects. So worrisome parents should really bring their children to get their Covid-19 vaccines.

All in all, I am happy that both my children have been fully vaccinated. I wish the government will consider allowing them to get the 3rd dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
