Yes, you read that right. There will be up to RM60 AirAsia Fuel Surcharge starting from the 8th of March which is tomorrow. Gues it is not that cheap anymore to fly with this famous budget airline, right? Why is AirAsia charging fuel surcharge? Due to growing fuel prices, budget airline AirAsia has officially announced that it would be imposing a fuel tax on all new bookings starting immediately.

CEO of Capital A, Tony Fernandes, hinted at the move yesterday, stating that fuel will be expensive in the short term, which will result in higher costs for passengers. Starting on March 8 2022, domestic flights will be subjected to an RM10 fee, while foreign flights would incur a surcharge ranging from RM25 to RM60, depending on the duration of the travel. Yes! It is not directly about the distance between the two destinations.

This tax will only be applied to new bookings made after March 8 2022, thus current reservations will not be impacted by this change. In a statement, AirAsia stated that this is the first time the airline has charged fuel surcharges since 2015, and the business expressed the hope that the move would be only temporary. So that means this fuel surcharge can be removed once the cost of fuel has dropped, again?

Russia-Ukraine conflict is partly to be blamed!

Riad Asmat, the CEO of AirAsia Malaysia, notes that the scenario is no longer sustainable because oil prices have increased by 160 per cent since 2015, a spike that has been attributed in part to the Russian-Ukrainian war. The price of Brent Crude oil has not been above US$100 per barrel since 2014, but it is currently trading at US$118 (RM493) a barrel as of this writing, with analysts expecting that it might reach US$160 (RM668) by the end of next week.

It is said that while oil from Russia - the world's second-largest oil producer – has not been legally prohibited, substantial financial penalties on the country have caused purchasers to be wary of purchasing from Russian vendors. So are you happy with this new AirAsia fuel surcharge which might be temporary? Will it be a burden to you?

  1. I don't mind paying the extra charges after seeing how much the actual fare would be. This AA always have tricky prices and odd landing hours that gives them cheapest airport fees abroad. All in all, I had no problems with AA compared to Dragon Air, CX and MAS. No frills flights gave me least expectations actually.
