This Chinese New Year, our family had the opportunity to enjoy Calmex Abalone priced at RM799 (US$199) which is the most expensive abalone we have ever eaten in our life. For the uninitiated, abalones are the must-have premium delicacies during the lunar new year besides the white pomfret fish. We have always had abalones during our most celebrated festival but not one which is this huge and of course expensive.

Apparently, the Calmex Abalone we had sampled is harvested fresh from Mexico and canned by Ocean Garden Products which has been in this business for the past 50 years. It is understood that Calmex Abalones are wild abalones and only the finest will be chosen. It has been regarded as one of the best abalones in the world thanks to its distinctive strong flavour, famous tasty texture, and of course, its crazy, huge size. Are you curious to find out why it is regarded as one of the most expensive abalones in the world? Read on to find out.
Why is Calmex Abalone So Expensive?
My family and I have enjoyed abalones on a regular basis as they are becoming increasingly affordable. The common canned abalone prices that you can find in supermarkets can range from RM20 to RM120. You can even get one single abalone as cheap as RM5 in hypermarkets like Lotus's during the Chinese New Year. So why is Calmex Abalone so expensive?
Look at its HUGE size!
For starters, Calmex Abalone is so damn freaking expensive thanks to its HUGE size. The one we had eaten was not only thick and big but also had a whopping nett weight of 454 grams (16 oz) which is crazy enormous. As you can see from my photo, this Calmex Abalone is almost as big as my palm and definitely bigger than my clenched fist. Yes! So in our pink can of Calmex Abalone, there is only one gigantic abalone inside of it.
Almost as big as my palm!
Apart from that, Calmex Abalone is expensive as only the best wild abalone of the required size will be harvested. The species of wild abalone chosen is the yellowish pink abalone which is scientifically known as Haliotis Corrugata. Since all Calmex Abalones are hand-harvested from the wild instead of being farmed, their quantities are really limited and that is why each can will cost you a lot of money. Then again, I assure you that you will be enjoying the finest, premium abalone so it is worth every single penny spent.
How To Identify Authentic Calmex Abalone
Buying Calmex Abalone to be enjoyed with family members is very costly no thanks to its expensive price tag. Our Calmex Mexican Abalone is sold at an eye-watering price of RM799 (US$199). So how can we ensure that this wild Mexican abalone that we purchase is original? In other words, how can we identify an authentic Calmex Abalone so that we will not be cheated? You do not want your so-called most expensive abalone to turn out to be fake, no?
Yes! This is authentic Calmex Abalone alright!
The authenticity of the Calmex Abalone can be verified by looking at its iconic pink lithographed can. The lithographed top of the can is also embossed with the name "CAL MEX" from the inside. Moreover, the top of the can is also printed with the legend "Ocean Garden Products Inc" and Abalone Product of Mexico" inside the red ship wheel design. By checking these features, you can minimize the risk of buying a counterfeit Calmex Abalone.

Do You Still Need To Cook Canned Calmex Abalone?
The answer is no. You do not need to cook your canned Calmex Abalone. Out of the can, the abalone can already be served as it has been cooked. So you can eat it straight from the can. Of course, we chose to reheat it so that it tasted better. Besides the abalone, there is also some soup of water and salt that you can use as you cooking broth or as a sauce.
Ready-to-eat abalone out of the can!
Rest assured that the Mexican Calmex Abalone has been cleaned, bled and had its gut trimmed before being cooked and canned. Hence, the moment I opened the can I was really happy to see the huge, "golden" abalone waiting to be served. It was quite a sight to behold as we have never ever seen such a huge abalone in our life before.
How to Eat Calmex Abalone
As Calmex Abalone is ready to be served and eaten, you can enjoy it straight from the can but it will taste even better with your other dishes and of course, rice. Though no cooking is needed, it is highly suggested that you reheat your Calmex Abalone to maintain its tenderness and taste. You can also simply reheat the abalone together with its soup by using a microwave. Voila! Your huge, most expensive abalone is ready to be eaten.
I am ready to slice up this huge abalone!
After reheating our abalone, we decided to slice it into thin slices and mix them together with our other dishes. We got at least 20 slices at least which is a lot. We then mixed our slices of Calmex Abalone together with broccoli together with lots of delicious shiitake mushrooms. Finally, the soup from the can which had been seasoned was used as a garnish to complete our serving abalone.

ReplyDeleteWe grew up eating this brand. It was so so so good before - when you opened a can, the whole house would be filled with the fragrance. I would stand by my mum as she sliced it, hoping and praying that she would give me a bit to enjoy, so sweet, so very nice. We only had it on special occasions...and at grand Chinese banquets at the restaurants.
I don't know how true since I never bought any - I've seen the cans under heavy lock and key at the shops and supermarkets...but they say the ones these days are not so nice anymore.
Wow you grow up eating this brand? So it has been around like a really, really long time then.
