Netflix’s New AI Discover Tab Recommends What to Watch Based on Your Mood

Netflix is testing AI Discover, a new TV feature that recommends films and shows based on your mood, time and viewing preferences.

Choosing something to watch on Netflix can sometimes take longer than the programme itself. You scroll past familiar titles, browse a few categories, check what’s trending, and somehow end up watching nothing at all.

Netflix is testing a new way to solve that problem. Its AI Discover tab is designed to help viewers find something to watch by describing what they’re in the mood for.

Recommendations built around how you feel

The first experimental feature in AI Discover lets users browse curated themes based on factors such as mood, available time and viewing preferences.

Possible themes include:

  • Something light
  • Scare me
  • Family movie night
  • Quick watches
  • New and trending titles
  • Other mood-based suggestions

Rather than searching for a specific film or series, viewers can start with a general feeling. Maybe you want something comforting after a long day. Perhaps you’ve only got 30 minutes to spare. Or you might be looking for a film the whole family can watch together.

Once you select a theme, Netflix displays a collection of matching recommendations, complete with clips from relevant shows and films.

You can keep refining the results

The feature doesn’t stop after the first set of suggestions. Users can choose more specific themes to narrow down the results until they find something that catches their attention.

If the recommendations miss the mark, there’s also a “Something different” option, which lets viewers start again with a new direction.

Netflix is also adding a “Tune Your Recommendations” button beside the familiar Play and My List options. This gives users a way to:

  • Save titles they like
  • Improve future recommendations
  • Exclude films or shows they don’t want to see suggested again

That extra control could be useful for viewers whose Netflix home screen often fills up with titles that don’t match their tastes.

Netflix wants to make browsing less overwhelming

The launch reflects a wider challenge for streaming platforms: large libraries offer plenty of choice, but too much choice can make deciding what to watch harder.

Netflix says its recommendation system has already been shaped by actions such as giving titles a thumbs-up or adding them to My List. AI Discover adds another layer by allowing users to explain what they want in the moment.

The company described the feature as a way to recognise that different situations call for different recommendations. What works for a quiet evening alone might not suit a family film night or a short break between tasks.

That shift could move Netflix away from endless scrolling and towards a more interactive discovery process.

A testing ground for future features

Netflix is calling AI Discover its “test kitchen”, where it can experiment with new ways for viewers to find content.

The company says the feature will respond to what users tell it in real time while continuing to learn from their choices and feedback. Netflix will use that feedback to decide which ideas should be improved, retained or eventually introduced more widely across the service.

In other words, AI Discover is still a work in progress. The version users see today may change as Netflix learns which types of prompts, themes and controls are genuinely helpful.

How to find AI Discover on Netflix

The feature is initially rolling out in the United States to people who use Netflix in English on supported televisions.

Netflix plans to make it available to more users in the coming weeks. If your account has access, you’ll see:

  • A Discover button in the top navigation bar
  • A red gem icon
  • A New label beside the feature

At launch, AI Discover is focused on supported TV devices rather than every Netflix platform.

Will AI Discover make choosing something easier?

That depends on how well the recommendations understand what you mean. Mood-based prompts are useful when you know the kind of experience you want but don’t have a particular title in mind.

The real test will be whether Netflix can turn vague requests such as “something funny but not too silly” or “a tense film for tonight” into suggestions that feel genuinely relevant.

For now, the feature gives Netflix another way to help viewers answer one of streaming’s most familiar questions: What should we watch?

If AI Discover appears on your Netflix account, try a few different themes and see how closely the results match your mood. Which recommendation would you choose first?
