On the 29th of March, millions of people across the globe had joined forces to make Earth Hour happened! Households and businesses are encouraged to turn off their lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour in the evening. I'm sure mother earth is really grateful that finally she see a ray of hope. You see mother earth is bed-ridden right now. She's in a very sorry state, and we as her children should do everything in our might not to worsen her "health" anymore. And we should support her emotionally and physically so that she could regain her health again!
It's our duty to take care of our mother who all this while had gave us shelter, food and a place we call home. She's been protecting us since...I don't know. But the only thing I know right now is she her children-us to help her. So instead of celebrating Earth Hour only once a year, why don't we treat every hour as earth hour? Nope, I'm not calling us to return to our forefathers' cavemen way of life. All we need to do is be more courteous-be greener! That's all!
9 days after Earth Hour, here's 9 ways to make every hour Earth Hour:
1~Unplugged
Start by conserving energy at home. Statistics show that if all households saved 20% of their energy, it would be the equivalent of taking around 8 million cars off the road. Use compact fluorescent light bulb to save money and energy, and turn off lights, computers and other electrical appliances when not in use.
2~Paperless
Use less paper in office by emailing more, and using the back of old scrap piece for taking notes. Read this: 40% of rubbish is paper.
3~Art of Recycle
Learn the art of recycling by attempting to dispose aluminium cans and batteries at recycling centres.
4~Carpooling
Try it. Saves 50% energy and certainly could help saves more money!
5~Water Curfew
Instead of taking bath, try to shower more instead as it uses less water. If you're already taking showers, cut down your showering time from 8 minutes to 5 minutes. This help to save 513 pounds of water. And yeah, never wash dishes with the water running continuously from the tap.
6~My Shopping Bag
Yes. Don't use plastic bags if you are on a shopping spree. Instead, bring along your own shopping bags (cloth bags) to the grocery store. Every year, more than 500 billion plastic bags are distributed and less than 3% are recycled. They are typically made of polyethylene and can take up to 1,ooo years to biodegrade in landfills that emit harmful greenhouse gases.
7~Take Your Own Container
Avoid buying food or products packaged in plastic or styrofoam containers since they cannot be recycled. Yeah, use your Hello Kitty container instead.
8~Pay Bills Online
Not only can you save tree, but you also save yourself a whole lots of time avoiding the maddening queues-both on the road and in the banks!
9~Service Your Car
Giving your engine a tune-up can improve gas mileage by 4%, and keeping tires properly inflated can improve gas mileage by more than 3%. If you can boost your gas mileage from 20 to 24 m.p.g., you car will put 200 fewer pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.
