You're just somebody that I USED to know~la~la~la~la~la! Ha :D By now most Malaysians have already tuned in to this amazingly strange song here, right? Local radio stations kept on dishing out this song to their loyal listeners and it seems like we can't get enough of it, can we? I am still listening to this song from Gotye every single day after I first stumbled upon it like months ago. Makes me wonder why I won't get tired of it. Is it because it is really one darn good song?
Is it because Gotye's voice blends whimsically to the melodies of the song? Or is it because of Kimbra's irresistible appeal? No matter what, it is undeniable that Somebody That I Used To Know is one heck of an addictive song right? This song is so successful that it had topped countless charts including Billboard 100 for being so infectious. Naturally this song is Gotye's best selling single ever and it can be considered to be his very own signature song from now onward.
Gotye and Kimbra (right) in pieces... :p
Do you know that Somebody That I Used to know was written by Gotye himself and it was recorded in his parents' house? So home is a good place to source of inspiration after all aye? And of course this has certainly got something to do with Gotye's very own personal experience in his previous failed relationships. I wonder who's that somebody that Gotye used to know...the one who stoop so low to brutally cut him into pieces. LOL :D
The slightly handsomer Gotye with facial hair. LOL :D
IMHO, Somebody That I Used To Know is beautifully arranged. It is not only soft, but also light and breezy in the beginning and heavily addictive before entering the chorus. Then you will start to tap you feet and nod your head. It's infectious! Likewise Kimbra's voice (and presence) really gave the song a much-needed depth. If Kimbra wasn't featured, this single of Gotye wouldn't be a hit at all. Hmm...speaking about the MTV...it is artistically simple and yet...very profound. Both were cut into "pieces" in the body art exhibition. So let's listen and watch carefully. :p

[Gotye:]
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
[Kimbra:]
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know
[Gotye:]

How do you like the song? If this is your first time listening to it, you might need to replay it a few more times to get into the groove. Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know is an excellent song for those who have their hearts broken by somebody that they used to know (ala boyfriend or girlfriend).
